Commentary: Free Tuition 2 (The Locker Problem)

 

            For many years, my favorite first day of class activity was called Free Tuition; it’s a non-violent variation of the Josephus Problem.  Thus, I reworked the well-known locker problem into “Free Tuition 2.”  This is a nice problem, with careful representation, students usually find the pattern, and it links to some nice number theory.  A variation of this assignment was used as a sample document on alternative assessment for one of the accreditation agencies.  8/05
