Commentary: Toothpick and Gumdrop Pattern Problems

 

            These problems are a nice way to help students make connections between   equations and number patterns, where they can visually link both recursive and explicit equations to the pictures.  The HTML versions of the first pictures do not look right, but they’re fine on in the word and pdf versions.  8/05
