Commentary: Fractions to Decimals with Base Ten Blocks

 

            This is a nice activity for helping students get a better mental model of decimals and of how they relate to fractions.  Students use base ten blocks and a “sharing” model of division to model unit fractions.  Rounding and repeating vs. terminating decimals enter naturally.  I like to follow up with a deeper activity on repeating decimals.  7/05
