Commentary: Fraction Tiles
Students often initially have trouble with using a set of tiles as a unit, but this is actually the most flexible manipulative model, as it’s easy to represent any reasonably sized denominator. The models also accurately translate to pictures. The first few problems are fairly straightforward, once students adjust to the model, but the fourth and fifth problems are much harder. Some similar activities are Fraction Puzzles, which use other manipulatives to make area and length models of fractions, and Percent Puzzles, which also use tiles. 8/05
