Commentary: Geoboard Fractions

 

            I’ve only used this assignment once, and it was kind of a disaster, but I still think it was a good idea, so I’m putting it up.  This assignment did not work well as a paper when we were studying fractions in Math 130, when the course was for people who did poorly on our placement test (before we changed it to a class for prospective teachers).  Students didn’t find many patterns, didn’t see the point, wanted to divide by zero etc.  Nonetheless, there are some nice connections here  Farey sequences come up, and also just connecting slope to the size of a fraction.  I think this would work better later in the course, and as an in-class activity, not a writing assignment.  7/05
