Commentary: Probability Games Paper
For the
assignment, I first gathered a variety of probability games to show the
students. This was a very open-ended
assignment
too open-ended, in that I ended up needing to
extend the time and give a lot of direction to many groups. On the other hand, students were engaged, and
many learned a lot. The tricky part is
that the students, mostly prospective elementary teachers, didn’t have the
background to tell how difficult it will be to analyze and/or simulate a game. With most groups, I helped them modify their
initial idea into something reasonable for a paper. If I use this assignment again, I will build
consultation with the instructor into the assignment itself.
Another
issue was that students hadn’t used the fathom software a lot, and some got
very frustrated trying to set up their own simulations. I changed the assignment to allow physical
simulations. I ended up giving out a
follow up handout too. 8/05
