Commentary: Base Five Activities
This is a study group homework assignment, mostly adapted from the Bassarear text book instructor’s guide. It makes some nice connections with previous activities about finding patterns in base ten number tables. I did find that students would do things like call moving from 14 to 20 “adding 6,” which makes perfect sense, but doesn’t necessarily move toward an understanding of base 5. I did this activity near the beginning of our work on bases; in the future I might wait a little longer. 7/05
